Tips for Choosing a Bathroom Cabinet

When you are designing your bathroom the choice of which bathroom cabinet you should use should be well thought out. Your bathroom cabinetry is one of the most expensive parts of your bathroom and it is something that you are going to live with for a long time. So before you make any decisions here are a few very important details that you should consider.

What Material is Your Cabinet Made From?

The most important factor that you need to consider when choosing a cabinet for your bathroom is what type of material the cabinet is constructed from. Many times the sales person you are talking to is trying to work within your budget and may suggest that you should go with a cabinet made from MDF. In a bathroom where there is plenty of water and plumbing accidents wait to happen you should seriously consider only having plywood cabinets.

The reason for having plywood cabinets in your bathroom is because they will not be damaged if water happens to get on them. On the other had if you have a leak under your sink and the MDF gets wet your cabinetry is going to expand. MDF is not waterproof and don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise. If your cabinet gets soaked with water the cabinet will expanded. There is no easy or cheap way to fix the cabinet if this happens so play it safe and go with a 100% plywood bathroom cabinet.

What Height Would You Like Your Cabinet

There are three heights that you can choose from when you are considering your cabinets. The old standard is 30" in height. This is a good height for bathrooms with small children. However many master baths are being done at either 34" in height or some are even going as high as 36" which is the height of your kitchen countertops. Many adults choose this height for two main reasons.

The first reason is for extra storage space. The taller the cabinet the more storage options you have. For example you can then include drawers at the bottom of the vanity which is a great place to store extra towels. With this added height you could even include small roll out drawers in the cabinet. This is great for storing things such as hair dryers, curling irons or electric razor storage.

The other reason is just for the fact of not having to bend over quite as far when using the sink area. This is especially helpful for those with back problems. One other reason that some people choose this height is they are preplanning for anyone in their family that may become disabled and need wheel chair access. Many homeowners that have aging parents that may come to stay with them choose this height so when the time comes the conversion is much easier.

When you are decorating your bathroom there are many options for cabinetry. Here are just two of the things that you will need to consider before you purchase a bathroom cabinet.
